9 October 2026

Welcome to this week's newsletter.

We have had another very busy and exciting week. Year 2 have been extending their learning about the history of aviation by visiting the Midland Air Museum; Year 4 have been working with Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and a group of children took part in art workshops at the British Art Show.

We are looking forward to welcoming families to Parents' Evenings next week. We are aware that there have been a few people who have struggled with the online booking system. Please just call or email our office staff who will be happy to make the appointment for you.

This Sunday we are encouraging as many families as possible to take part in the Junior Park Run at the War Memorial Park at 8.45am. After this the school will be open until 10am and the PTA will be selling sausage sandwiches and tea/coffee. Everyone is very welcome.

Reception

As part of our knowledge and understanding of the world, the children have been focusing on Harvest, welcoming Penny from our local Methodist Church who spoke to children in small groups about harvest and what it means. The children enjoyed sharing the text 'The Little Red Hen' and enjoyed going to the kitchen to make flapjacks with Mr Kumar, our school chef (which they enjoyed for their pudding this week). In phonics, they have continued to build on their phonetical awareness, learning phonemes and corresponding graphemes: m, n, d and r, and they have also started to read CVC words. As mathematicians, the class puppet has been making lots of mistakes with 1:1 correspondence and the children have been helping the puppet count accurately – understanding that the last number is the total number. Building on their autumn learning from last week, the children have been applying their scissor skills to cut out a leaf and collage it using autumn colours. As part of their continuous provision and strengthening their fine motor skills, the children have had playdough, tracing, leaf rubbing, Litte Red Hen making and much more! Another busy week for our Reception children.

Year 1

This week Year 1 have continued exploring number bonds that make 10. We have used a variety of practical resources, thinking aloud strategies and part-part-whole models. The children have used and created number stories to solve problems demonstrating their knowledge and understanding.

In English we have continued to explore the book 'Old Bear', thinking about how the characters felt when trying to help Old Bear.  We have thought about how nouns change when we make them plural (more than one) and reminded ourselves that a 'good' sentence needs a capital letter at the start, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end. We are also trying to form our letters correctly and keep our handwriting neat – so lots to think about!

As scientists, we have begun to sort and explore different materials and consider some of their properties, thinking about why they may have been chosen to construct certain parts of a house.

Year 2

This week Year 2 have been using practical equipment to partition tens numbers into tens and ones. They have used a place value chart and part-part-whole model to consider other representations of tens numbers. As writers, the children have planned and started to write their adapted story of Jack and the Beanstalk using a range of techniques including expanded noun phrases. As artists, children have been learning how to draw facial features and have found out some facts about some well-known artists who have painted self-portraits, including Frieda Kahlo. In addition, 2B have visited the Midland Air Museum. They were very engaged and interested in all the old aeroplanes which they got to sit in and found out some more information about Frank Whittle.

Year 3

As mathematicians, the children have been subtracting tens and hundreds from 3-digit numbers. In English, they have completed their independent writing based on "The Iron Man". As scientists, they investigated how igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks are formed using starburst sweets and different factors such as heat and pressure. And, as artists, they completed their final piece of work inspired by Steven Brown's "McCoo".

Year 4

This week in Maths, the children have continued to build confidence with their written methods of addition, extending their skills to solve calculations involving 4-digit numbers. They have also applied their learning through a range of problem-solving activities, explaining their reasoning and selecting suitable strategies. In English, the children enjoyed exploring Arthur and the Golden Rope, making thoughtful predictions and creating abstract noun poems inspired by the story's settings. Our new writing unit focuses on myth narratives, and the children have begun investigating the key features of this exciting genre. As historians, the children explored the Anglo-Saxons, learning about why they came to Britain and where they originated from, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of this important period in history. They also developed their coding skills through the ‘Get with the Programme’ initiative, using Scratch to design and play a moon-rock game. They debugged errors and extended their skills by tackling additional challenges.

Year 5

This week in Year 5, the children have been immersed in the text 'When we Walked on the Moon' by David Long. They have predicted the content, discussed key language, and written Moon poems and character reactions using effective descriptive language. As mathematicians, the children have used redistribution to add, as well as applying their addition and subtraction skills by selecting and discussing the most efficient method to solve a range of problems. In Science, they have investigated water resistance and how the shape of an object affects the water resistance. In their topic session, Year 5 created timelines detailing the evolution of industry in Coventry.

Year 6

This week as mathematicians, the children have been learning to read scales with intervals of 2,4,5 and 10 and rounding numbers to 10 million.  As historians, the children have been investigating who the British Army were and the role they played in WW2.  They have also studied the role propaganda played in the recruitment of soldiers from around the world.
In English, they have planned and begun writing their diaries in role as the main character from the story Rose Blanche imagining events that may have occurred during WW2.

As scientists, in teams they have planned their own scientific experiment related to how shadows are formed considering fair testing and making predictions.
