6 November 2026

Welcome to this week's newsletter.

We have had a very exciting first week back. We were lucky enough to be selected to have moon samples in school. Children have been able to learn about space by looking at the samples of the moon and meteorites.

Year 4 have had a fantastic day at Compton Verney, where they explored Viking life through a range of outdoor, interactive and hands-on activities, bringing their learning to life in a memorable way.

It was lovely to see year 2 parents in school working alongside their children in maths. Mastering Number sessions aim to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense and the aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Hopefully, this session provided you with ways to support your child with maths at home.

This week students from our partner schools in Northern Ireland visited Coventry for three days. We were very pleased to take them on the peace trail, work with them at a poetry workshop and enjoy a learning session at the War Memorial Park. This project is linked to the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement and it will see students designing and building a peace park in the War Memorial Park.

In the half-term holiday we were delighted to run our first holiday club. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and they were able to take part in a wide range of crafts, art and sport. Many thanks to Mrs Clarke and Mr Kumar for running this. Please look out for our questionnaire about the next holiday club.

Next Friday is Children in Need Day. As we have recently had a crazy hair day, we have decided not to have a non-uniform day. Instead, please can children bring in loose change to fill a giant Pudsey picture in the playground. Children should wear normal uniform next Friday. Thank you for your support.

Reception

What a wonderful week of sparkles and fun in reception.

This week, the children have been learning about the history of Bonfire Night through the story of Guy Fawkes and have independently created some fantastic firework masterpieces. In English, we have shared the story The Quiet Little Firework and, through small group activities, the children have been developing their vocabulary by watching fireworks displays and discussing how they look and sound. Through their knowledge and understanding of the world, they have been learning about the celebration Diwali. they have enjoyed sharing  the texts: Lighting the Lamp and Rama and Sita, learning about how and why Diwali is celebrated.

Within our continuous provision, the children have had the opportunity to play with the Rama and Sita small world resources, make paper divas, take part in henna fine motor activities, create rangoli patterns with both sand and sequins as well as dressing up in bright saris and scarfs. In focus groups, the children have been manipulating clay to create their own diva lamps, helping them to strengthen their fine motor skills and finger muscles.

As mathematicians this week, the children have been learning about prepositions, learning about the language used for the placement of objects (under, next to, on etc..) Finally, in their phonics this week, we have been focusing on writing and sounding out CVC words. A busy first week back to school.

In addition, parents should have received emails about junk modelling – donations and its purpose, reading books being given out and our school reading system and also support with winter coats, buttons and zips.

The Reception children and staff wanted to thank Mr Scullion, who has been busy in the half-term making and building them a new construction site for diggers and larger construction vehicles. The children have embraced their new space!

Year 1

In English this week, Year 1 have begun to explore the story 'Number 7 Evergreen Street'  by Julia Patton; exploring adjectives and vocabulary used to describe the setting and role-playing characters' feelings and emotions during key scenes. We have continued to focus on our letter formation and handwriting as well as our sentence accuracy; really taking the time to set work out neatly and clearly with the correct punctuation. We have also explored using the word 'and' to join ideas within a sentence.

As mathematicians, the children have started to extend their knowledge of number facts and addition. They have practically explored and identified different parts that can be combined to make a given ‘whole number’ and have begun to recognise that the parts can be added in any order. They have written number sentences/ equations to match their part-part-whole models, taking care to form numbers correctly.

As scientists, the children have begun to think about living and non-living things. We have thought about what living things do that non-living things cannot and sorted a selection of objects/ images.

In PSHE the children have been thinking about different roles within the family and how we should all work together.

Year 2

This week the children have been learning all about grouping amounts in maths. They’ve used counters to make different equal and unequal groupings.  In English lessons, the children have created and written about their own amazing inventions inspired by the story Rosie Revere Engineer.  As scientists, they have been exploring the properties of a variety of materials including metal, glass, wood, plastic, paper and cardboard.  They have also explained the difference between objects and materials.  In addition, as part of Space Week, the children were very excited to handle, observe and test some meteorites and rocks from space!

Year 3

As mathematicians, the Year 3 children have been learning how to solve problems using models such as bar models. In English, they have completed writing an explanation of their trap designed to capture the Iron Man. As scientists, they took part in an investigation of the effects of water on different types of rocks, as well as having the exciting opportunity to examine rock samples from the moon! And, as historians, the children have begun a new topic where they will learn about the Romans and their impact on Britain.

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have been busy showcasing their writing skills by publishing their fantastic myth narratives. They have also continued to use Arthur and the Golden Rope as inspiration for writing an information guide. In Science, the children began their new unit on electricity, learning about electrical safety and how to stay safe around electrical devices. As historians, they explored the question Who were the Vikings? and discovered interesting facts about Viking life and culture. In maths, the children investigated adjacent multiples of 3 and 6 and solved problems using the relationship between the 3 and 6 times tables. To round off an exciting week, the year group thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Compton Verney, where they explored Viking life through a range of outdoor, interactive and hands-on activities, bringing their learning to life in a memorable way.

Year 5

This week in Year 5 the children have continued studying the artwork of Lowry by honing their one point perspective drawing skills to a scene depicting Coventry. They shall later use watercolours to paint these in a Lowry colour palette and add his famous matchstick men. The children also had an exciting afternoon using microscopes to explore real space rocks - a fantastic way to apply our learning from the Space Centre Visit. As mathematicians, they have applied their knowledge of times tables and multiplying by multiples of ten to the short and grid method of multiplication. In English, Year 5 have developed their proofreading and publishing skills, selecting one of their previous narrative pieces to add to their publishing book using their best handwriting.

Year 6

This week as writers, year 6 are planning and beginning to write a speech recognising Rose Blanche's bravery and heroism.  They have worked hard to include formal language choices, synonyms and antonyms, commas for parenthesis, semi-colons, passive voice and adverbs.  As Scientists the children have taken part in an incredibly exciting whole school experience 'Borrow the Moon' where they have explored and observed real lunar and meteorite samples collected during NASA's Apollo missions.

In maths, they have practising long multiplication of 2-digit numbers by 2,3 and 4 digits and have applied this to real life problems. Scaling number facts to solve more challenging divisions equations has been another focus.
