 16 October 2026

Welcome to this week's newsletter.

Children have been very busy this week preparing for the Millsy's Takeover Night on Monday 19 October. Our pupil marketing team have created publicity materials and a video advert; the chef team have chosen the pizza toppings and the Front of House team have been practising customer service.

Everyone is welcome to come to this great evening. The restaurant will be open upstairs from 3.30-7pm.  You can eat in or take away. Giant pizza slices are from only £5. All profits will go directly to the school and will go towards our playground renovation project.  What a fantastic end of term treat for the family!

We also have an Autumn Festival at the allotment on Thursday 22 October 3.45 - 4.45pm. Please join us for some home grown pumpkin soup.

We would like to thank all reception families who joined us for the story trail at our allotment on Tuesday. It was a lovely evening and we were very pleased that the sun was shining on us. Many thanks to the PTA for their support.

Some of our Language Ambassadors went along to Coventry Cathedral this week for the launch of The Coventry Language Policy Framework. The children shared their languages with other children from different schools across Coventry. They also took part in several Language-themed activities.

Year 5 had a fantastic day of learning at the Space Centre which will prepare them for our Space Week after half-term.

Mrs Bollands was very honoured to formally welcome Rev Andrew Krauss to Earlsdon at his Installation Service at St Barbara's Church this week. The Bishop of Coventry praised our school for our commitment to peace education and for the part we play in the wider community.

Next week the PTA have requested that Friday is a Crazy Hair/Hat/Headband Day in exchange for a donation to the PTA. Please note that Friday 23 October will be the last day before half-term.

Reception

This week the children have been developing their knowledge and understanding of the world by sharing the texts ' Ten Little Pumpkins' and 'Spooky Pants'. They have been using pumpkins grown by our school allotment to count, sort and sequence as well as taking one home. They have been using their scissor and tracing skills to make their own spooky pumpkins, as well as using their oracy skills to describe a variety of unusual pumpkins during small class focus work, developing their use of adjectives. As mathematicians, they have continued to develop their understanding of subsisting, as well as understanding that a quantity can stay the same, even when the sizes vary. In their phonics sessions, they have learnt the word diagraph - learning that two letters make one sound, and have been applying 'ck' to a range of words. As part of their physical development, the children are enjoying using the scooters which have replaced the balance bikes. Both inside and outside, the children are very much enjoying some new role-play toys. We have been fortunate enough to get a new role-play fridge and washing machine, as well as some new pretend pets. Finally, the children have been cutting, tracing, hammering and sorting to continue to develop their fine motor skills.

Thank you for joining us on our story trail this week - it was lovely!

Year 1

This week Year 1 have been out on a 'Local Area' Walk around Earlsdon. We have been looking at different types of houses and noticing their features. We have also compared old and new houses and noticed stained-glass windows, patterned floor tiles, ornate/ coloured brickwork and mouldings around the roofline, decorative ridge tiles, decoration around windows, chimney pots etc. We discovered the 'house of Earlsdon', the old schoolhouse, Criterion Theatre and the nail factory as well as other notable historical buildings along our route. Back in school we have reflected on the type of house that we live in and have drawn and used collage materials to create the house of our dreams!

As mathematicians we have investigated odd and even numbers, identifying them from a selection of different representations; numerical, pictorial and groups of objects. We have also begun to think about counting in tens and ordering multiples of ten on a number line.

In English we have continued writing our descriptions of characters from 'Old Bear', thinking about different adjectives we could use to describe the toys and how they were feeling.

Finally, in PSHE we have been thinking about who our special people are, how we know that they are special to us and who we would say is our family 'Superhero'... I wonder who we nominated and why?!?🙂

Year 2

This week the children have been continuing to use practical equipment to partition two-digit number into tens and ones.  They have also started to work practically on simple subtraction stories using counters to represent numbers to 10.  In English lessons the children have been completing their own stories with a twist on Jack and the Beanstalk. They have attempted to include some expanded noun phrases and exclamation sentences to improve their writing, as well as writing sentences with accurate punctuation.  As geographers, children have been learning about maps and their purpose before drawing their own of the local area.

Year 3

In English, the children have been learning about explanation writing, where they will be designing and writing about a trap for the Iron Man. As mathematicians, they are continuing to learn and consolidate their knowledge of place value in 3-digit numbers, and adding and subtracting them. As scientists, they learned about the everyday uses of different types of rocks, thinking about their properties. And, as historians, the children learned about the neolithic monument of Stonehenge, and how it was built using sarsen and bluestones.

Year 4

Year 4 have had another exciting week of learning. As mathematicians, they have solved problems involving subtraction, using bar models and number lines to help them calculate. In English, the children have analysed the example text and explored the features of an effective myth narrative. They have also written their own character descriptions of Fenrir, a giant wolf, from Norse mythology. As historians, they have learned about the different kingdoms that existed in Anglo-Saxon Britain and social hierarchy structure.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 enjoyed an exciting trip to the Space Centre in Leicester where they explored interactive exhibitions about Journeys into Space; the Solar System; the Universe and the Space Race. They also took part in a science-packed workshop about how rockets are powered and finished with a session in the planetarium. It was a great day which enhanced their forces learning in Science and When We Walked on the Moon writing unit. They will continue to apply their new-found knowledge in our Science and Topic sessions next half-term which focus on Earth and Space, as well as the Space Race. In English this week, the children planned a story about being the first astronaut to step foot on Mars. As mathematicians, they defined and found factors; and created rows, rectangles and squares to describe prime, composite and square numbers.

Year 6

This week at mathematicians, the children have been understanding the order of operations and using the BIDMAS triangle.  They have also learnt to explain why the product stays the same when one factor is doubled and the other is halved.  As historians the children have learnt why children across Britain were evacuated from towns and cities.   They have investigated the impact that this had on their everyday lives.

In English, the children completed their drafting of the diary in role as Rose Blanche and have published their final piece. We spent time considering improvements that could be made in relation to punctuation, vocabulary and spelling. As scientists, they carried out their science experiments to find out what factors effect the type of shadows that are formed for example by changing the height of the light source.
