223 October 2026

Welcome to this week's newsletter.

As we come to the end of a very busy half-term, it's fantastic to see how much the children have achieved in their learning. We have been reviewing progress and are so impressed with learning in all year groups.

In addition to all the hard work in the classroom, children have been working equally hard during all the enrichment visits that our teachers very carefully plan, including visits to the Midlands Air Museum, the Space Centre, Spencer Park, the Herbert Art Gallery, our allotment, Ryton Organic, the Canal Basin, walks in Earlsdon, and much more.

This week we want to say a huge thank you to Millsy's Restaurant for their continued support. Our aspirations work with them enables pupils to have the opportunity to apply for jobs, learn about work in the hospitality sector and then have practical work experience. On Monday this week we had a fabulous takeover night at Millsy's. We are so grateful to the families who were able to attend this event.  Millsy's very generously donate all profits from our takeover nights directly to the school. At the moment we are raising money for a playground makeover, so the money raised on Monday will go towards this. Millsy's Cafe Bar - Home Page

We also want to say a massive thank you to our wonderful PTA for all their work this half-term. They worked closely with the allotment committee this week to run a brilliant pumpkin soup event at our allotment. All money raised will go towards our playground makeover!

Thank you to all parents who have supported The Hive after our big relaunch this term. We are very excited to be adding chess, Mandarin, STEM, gym circuits and Superhero Fitness to our after-school programme. If your child hasn't been before, why not book in for a session after half-term - it's a great end to the school day.

We are looking forward to our first holiday club next week. We have a wide range of activities on offer. We will be running a holiday club in the Spring half-term holiday. We will also be offering a two-week club in the summer holidays. We will be sending out a survey to ask parents about which two weeks in the summer would be most helpful to families.

We hope that you have a relaxing half-term holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday 2 November.

Junior Leadership Team

What an exciting week it has been for our Year 5 and Year 6 children as they have had the opportunity to apply for their Junior Leadership roles across school. Many of our older pupils are now wearing lanyards and will be supporting various staff and departments around the school. A huge congratulations to our successful pupils.

Reception

This week, the children have been learning all about the four seasons: Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer. Reception have been finding out which season they were born in and exploring their birthdays. We have had lots of fun during our classroom play, celebrating birthdays in the home corner, writing party invitations and designing our very own party crowns! In Phonics, we have learnt the new sounds h, b, f and l, while continuing to practise segmenting and blending CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. During our Maths sessions, the children have been exploring the concepts of more than and less than. They have enjoyed comparing quantities and identifying who has more or less.

The children have also enjoyed listening to a range of autumn stories, with one of their favourites being Pumpkins Wear Spooky Pants. Building on our learning from last week, the children have been busy finishing and designing their very own pumpkin pants. We have seen some wonderfully creative ideas! Despite the miserable weather, Reception still managed to enjoy their very first trip outdoors for a short autumn walk. The children did brilliantly, spotting the signs of autumn around them! What a fantastic first half-term we have had at school! We are so proud of how well the children have settled in, embraced new experiences and enjoyed their learning. Well done, Reception! Have a wonderful half-term break!

Year 1

In English this week, Year 1 have been editing and finalising their character descriptions of Bramwell Brown. They have even published a section of their description for their 'English Publishing Book'. They have worked really hard to use all of the sentence accuracy skills they have learnt so far in year 1. We are really proud of the progress that they have made.

As mathematicians, the children have started to extend their knowledge of odds and evens and looked at numbers beyond ten. They have also counted in tens and thought about decade numbers (multiples of ten); and can say how many tens make a given decade number.

As scientists, the children completed an experiment to find out which material was the most transparent. They had to explore, test, and investigate a range of materials before reaching a scientific conclusion.

In PSHE the children have been considering their own family network and about how family members help us in different ways.

Year 2

This week as mathematicians, the children have been practising subtraction through a number of strategies: crossing out, number lines and the column method by subtracting the ones first.  In English lessons the children have started a new unit inspired by the story ‘Rosie Revere Engineer’ by Andrea Beatty. They have begun to find out what is meant by an engineer and invent some new machines of their own.  The children have loved their topic on flight this term. Class 2H went to the Midland Air Museum to find out more information about Frank Whittle, while the whole year group had lots of fun flying their various kites on Hearsall Common.  Well done Year 2!

Year 3

This week, as mathematicians, the children have been learning to use the column method for subtraction, including renaming. In English, they have been exploring explanation writing, including using grammar techniques such as commas in a list, conjunctions and prepositions. As scientists, they learned about the three main types of weathering: chemical, physical and biological. And, as historians, the children ended their learning about prehistory with a lesson on the changes that occurred from the Stone Age to the end of the Iron Age.

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have been busy writing their own myth narratives, using their own Norse-inspired mythical creatures and magical items to bring their stories to life. In maths, the children have been practising counting in 3s and 6s and exploring adjacent multiples of 3. As part of Design and Technology, they innovated a recipe for Anglo-Saxon oatcakes before making and tasting their own creations. The children also designed and made their own Anglo-Saxon-inspired brooches using clay. Finally, they learnt about what life was like in an Anglo-Saxon village. It has been a fantastic week of creativity, learning and hands-on experiences!

Year 5

This week in Year 5, the children enjoyed an exciting RAF-led STEM day designing, building and testing rockets, as well as designing sustainable aircraft for the future. In English, they have written and edited first-person narratives detailing a Martian adventure including recently taught skills such well-punctuated speech, expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, parenthesis and short sentences for effect. As mathematicians, the children have practised using known facts to multiply by 10, 100 and 1000, and applied this to the grid (partitioning) method. Lastly as artists, Year 5 have rehearsed creating perspective in their drawings ready to produce Lowry-inspired artwork.

Year 6

This week in English the children have been learning to use new vocabulary effectively through a model text and then how to craft a powerful speech honouring Rose Blanche's extraordinary courage during World War II.  As historians the children have been investigating the Coventry Blitz and using eyewitness accounts to inspire pieces of silhouette artwork.

As mathematicians, the children have been practising multiplying larger numbers by multiples of 10 mentally,  before moving onto exploring different written methods for multiplication including grid and long column multiplication. As scientists they have been exploring ways to present data focusing on line graphs making decisions about scales and which data to plot.
