We were delighted to welcome our new Reception children this week. They have settled in really well and are quickly learning the routines. Well done to all pupils for a brilliant first full week back. We have been very impressed with their behaviour and attitude to learning.
We have a busy term coming up and the diary dates are included in this newsletter. Moving forward we plan for them to be put on the website calendar which you will be able to view on your devices.
We are pleased that we have a number of exciting new initiatives that we are developing, including The Hive, Family Sunday, a new website, holiday clubs and a range of new learning opportunities. Please bear with us while we get these up and running. Don't hesitate to get in touch, either in person or by email, if you have any questions or suggestions.
We are looking forward to seeing you at our first ever Family Sunday event this weekend on 13 September from 2-4pm. This is a free event with lots of fun activities to take part in.

Table Tennis Club
Key Stage 2 table tennis club is starting again this Saturday (12 September). There is a session for girls and boys from 11am-12pm and a girls only session from 12 - 12.45pm This club is free and it is a drop-in club so you don't need to register for it. Please note that entrance is through the car park gate and we will open this from 10.55 - 11.05 and 11.55 - 12.05. Unfortunately we are unable to open the gate during the session.

Reception
What a wonderful start to school our new Reception children have had! They look very smart in their school uniforms. They have been finding their new coat pegs, learning to recognise their names, meeting new friends, playing collaboratively in their new classrooms, as well as exploring the outside classroom. They have shared the story ‘Starting School’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg and in circle time have been sharing their names. In addition, they have been meeting their teachers, learning their carpet spots and have even started having their lunch at school! What a wonderful start to the newest members of our school. Well done!

Year 1
Children in year 1 have made a fabulous start to the new academic year! Over the past week or so they have settled into their new classrooms, explored the continuous provision opportunities still available to them during Autmn term and have begun to adjust to their new timetable and routines. In Maths we have practised counting by singing songs, used practical equipment and objects to count out groups and have used our subitising skills to recognise 'how many' are in a given group by just looking.
In English we have been focussing on our handwriting, thinking about our posture, position and pencil grip. We have concentrated on forming our letters neatly and correctly, keeping the writing a consistent shape and size and keeping it on the line. We have also begun to explore the story ‘The Story Machine’ by Tom McLaughlin, thinking about adjectives to describe how the main character (Elliot) may be feeling and how this changed through the story as his confidence developed.
As a start to our topic work, the children briefly went out of school on Wednesday afternoon and stood on the corner by the library. We were looking at our local area and thinking as 'geographers' about how the land is used; what we could see and identify. We also noticed signs of seasonal change as we are moving into autumn and discussed this back in class.

Year 2
We are really pleased that the children have settled into their new routines in Year 2. This week the children have been practising number bonds to 10. They have used counters, ten frames and rekenreks, to find combinations of numbers to 10. In English lessons they have had an exciting delivery! Based around the story ‘The Story Machine’ the children had to work out what the machine was and what the machine did, they have written predictions based on their thoughts and a letter back to the boy in the story. In addition, the children have enjoyed starting a topic on ‘flight’ they have found out some facts about the inventor of the jet engine – Sir Frank Whittle!

Year 3
This week has been a busy but lovely week in Year 3! The children have been writing stories in English based on "The Story Machine" by Tom McLaughlin. As mathematicians, they have been learning about place value using numbers up to 1000. In their topic lessons, they have begun learning about the Stone Age - the development of tools from stone, and how people developed from hunter-gatherers into settled farmers. As scientists, the children learned about the layers of the earth - the upper crust, mantle and core. And, as artists, they learned about how cave paintings formed an early form of communication and expression in prehistoric times.

Year 4
This week, the children have worked incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum. In Maths, they have been reviewing column addition, developing their confidence when regrouping ones and tens to solve increasingly challenging calculations. In English, the children planned and wrote their own imaginative short stories based on machine designs they had created, carefully using fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases to make their writing more engaging and descriptive. In Topic, they explored the concept of trade and learnt how goods are transported from different countries around the world before reaching consumers. In Science, we began our new unit on States of Matter, where the children investigated the properties of solids, liquids and gases and discussed how materials can be grouped according to their characteristics. We have been very impressed with the enthusiasm and effort shown throughout the week.

Year 5
This week in Year 5, the children have continued their exploration of The Story Machine. They have analysed the illustrations, identified and explained the key themes, and finished by designing and pitching their own imaginative inventions! In Maths, they have applied their place value knowledge to read, write, order, and compare five-digit numbers. As scientists, they have been learning about Isaac Newton and his theories about forces. They have also explored the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces and how these affect the movement of objects. The children have also begun a new topic about the Industrial Revolution. This week, they explored how settlements have changed over time, including the impact of industrialisation on the countryside and the development of suburbs. Furthermore, 5T enjoyed a busy and exciting afternoon at the allotment!

Year 6
Year 6 have settled well back into school. As writers, they have been analysing the text 'The Story Machine. They have been writing predictions using a point and evidence approach, creating character profiles, analysing and annotating illustrations from the text. As mathematicians, they have been solving problems using bar models. They have also been investigating how to adjust problems to make them easier to solve. Finally, they have been using their summer reading 'Wonder' to complete a piece of art work in the style of the front cover, writing their own precept and analysing the text in their guided reading sessions.

Languages
At Earlsdon Primary, we are proud to have over 45 different languages spoken within our school community. We celebrate this rich diversity by focusing on a different language each half-term.
This half-term, our focus language is German. We are fortunate to have several children in school who speak German, and we would love to celebrate their multilingualism as a real superpower.
If your child would like to share their German language skills with their class, teach a few words and phrases, or tell others about aspects of German culture, we would be delighted to hear from them. Please let your child's class teacher know if they would like to get involved.
