18 September 2026 

Firstly we would like to say a huge thank you to all the families who attended our first ever Family Sunday last weekend. It was lovely to see so many of you and get the chance to chat informally. We hope that you enjoyed seeing all our classrooms, taking part in activities and enjoying the refreshments.

As always our PTA were wonderful and gave up their time to run the refreshments. Thanks also for all the wonderful cake donations. The PTA raised over £300 and that money goes directly back to activities for children at school, including subsidising trips.  The PTA have their first meeting of the year on Monday 21 September at 7pm. Everyone is most welcome and we especially welcome parents coming for the first time. We need your support!

This week the school was a little quieter than normal because our Year 6 pupils went to Dol-Y-Moch residential centre in Wales for a week. We have been getting updates about all the adventurous activities that they have been taking part in. We will look forward to welcoming them home on Saturday.

We have sent out details about our new holiday club that will take place in Autumn half term. Places are being booked very quickly.

 

Table tennis

Our Key Stage 2 table tennis clubs take place on Saturday mornings. We have a session for girls and boys 11-12 and a girls only session 12 - 1.

Reception

What a fantastic first full week of school for our newest pupils! This week the children started their phonics lessons. They have been introduced to the language phoneme and grapheme, segment and blend and they have started their oral blending and how to pronounce s,a,t,p correctly. In small focus groups, they have been designing their journal covers and have relished looking at family photographs, telling their teachers all about who is in their family. In the morning, the children have started to self register by finding their name and placing it on a large photograph of the school! In our outside classroom. They have also had the opportunity to play with the outside kitchen, balance bikes and larger outdoor toys. Inside, the children have relished playing with the small world, play dough, construction, role play and much more! During our carpet times, we have shared the texts 'It's okay to make mistakes' and 'Ten Supeheros'. In maths, they have been counting objects, showing numbers by using their fingers and singing familiar nursery rhymes. Well done Reception on a fantastic first full week of school! 

 

Year 1 

This week in Maths Year 1 have been thinking about ordinal and cardinal numbers. The children have discussed the vocabulary used to describe the position of something eg when competing in race, the position of children standing in a queue, the position of days (dates) in a month etc. We have practically raced toy cars and identified finishing positions and have ordered objects in a line thinking about the vocabulary used to describe its position/ location; first, second, third etc. The children thought this was great fun!

In English we have begun to explore of the story 'Rosie's Walk'. We have independently made collage pictures of the main characters of the story and written their names using a capital letter to start. We have also retold the story both orally with actions and by sequencing a set of pictures. Next we are going to begin writing simple sentences to retell the journey that Rosie took on her walk.

In Science we have continued to think about seasonal changes. We have looked at the clothing that we would wear in different seasons to be protected in different types of weather and have begun to think about other creatures and how their lives are affected by seasonal changes. We have begun to investigate animals that hibernate through the winter and focussed on what these animals may be doing now in preparation.

Year 2 

This week in Year 2 the children have been learning about counting in tens. They have learnt that it is easier to count in groups of ten and practiced skip counting. They have also written expressions of amounts of ten and answered questions relating to the amounts of groups. In English lessons the children have orally rehearsed telling some sequences of stories before creating their own stories using some useful words to show the passing of time such as ‘first, next, then and after that.’ In addition the children have enjoyed finding out about the history of some flying machines, they even enjoyed making their own gyrocopter.

 

 

Year 3

The Year 3 children took part in all day workshops this week for hands-on, immersive learning about prehistoric Britain. They learned about the hunter-gatherers of the Stone Age, the discovery of smelting copper and tin to make bronze, and the development of hill forts, tribes and trade in the Iron Age. As mathematicians, they have been learning about number patterns and counting in 4s and 8s. In English, they have begun a new sequence of lessons using "The Iron Man" as their basis for writing. 

 

 

Year 4

This week, as mathematicians the children have been developing efficient subtraction strategies, including using the column method with regrouping. In English, the children explored a model information text about mountains and practised writing sentences using technical vocabulary linked to waterfalls. In Science, they investigated the properties of solids, liquids and gases by learning about how particles behave in each state of matter. As part of our Topic work, the children explored transport, trade and travel in Britain, using aerial photographs to identify and describe different types of land use. Both classes also thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Ryton Organic, where they tasted a variety of lettuces and learned about seed saving by collecting seeds from tomatoes. It was a fantastic opportunity to develop their understanding of sustainable food production through hands-on learning.

Year 5

This week in Year 5, the children have been immersed into the world of 'Leon and the Place Between' exploring a story box to predict the narrative; using expanded noun phrases to write a character description and writing spine poems to describe the setting. As mathematicians, they have identified patterns in 6 digit numbers and used this knowledge to describe rules, extend sequences and calculate missing terms. In science, the children have investigated the key question: 'how long does it take a ball to fall to the floor?" They discussed their results using key vocabulary such as mass, gravity and air resistance. Furthermore, as historians, Year 5 enjoyed conducting a field work study studying maps and exploring evidence in our local streets to identify how Earlsdon has changed as a result of industry.
