25 September 2026

Welcome to this week's newsletter.

We have had a very busy week in school! Year 2 enjoyed harvesting crops at the allotment ready to be cooked for school lunches. Year 5 classes have been to Coventry's Canal Basin to support their learning in geography.

Our holiday club places are filling quickly. We are looking forward to meeting with children who will be attending to ask about any special requests that they have for the week.

Please share details of our Open Mornings with families who have children starting school next September. The first one is Wednesday 7 October 9-10am.

As usual we have our free Key Stage 2 table tennis clubs at school on Saturday mornings. We are keen to encourage more children to come and have a go at this exciting sport.

Girls' Football Club

I'm Alice, and I'm a parent at the School and a volunteer coach for girls' football. With the excellent Mr Kumar, we run girls' football for all ages. This is part of The Hive, every Wednesday, 4.15-5pm.

I'm passionate about getting more girls playing football. I've got years of experience playing women's football and I'd love to help more girls feel part of a team and build a positive relationship with sport. At the sessions I  give the girls lots of encouragement and we have fun.

Please encourage your children and their friends to come along and try it out!

Reception

This week the children have been learning all about  pencil grip, and they have been learning how to hold a pencil correctly. As part of their provision this week the focus has been placed on fine motor activities, strengthening and using their pincer grip - tracing letters and shapes, pom-pom sorting with tweezers, sand tracing, using sticker dots and much more. In focus groups, the children have been introduced to their handwriting books and have been taught to form the letter 's' correctly (starting at the top and down to the bottom). During our carpet times, we have been focusing on the school rules and being kind, sharing the text 'The Rainbow Fish'. We have also continued to deepen our understanding of our families - who is in our family, how families can be different, as well as the city that we live in, sharing the text 'Who's in my family'. As mathematicians, the children have started to learn about subitising and have been looking at dot patterns to 3. Another super week for our Reception children, well done!

Year 1

This week Year 1 have been continuing with their exploration of numbers using partitioning. They have worked on number facts for 5 and then 10, using a variety of practical resources to partition in different ways. They have then drawn part-whole models and number sentences to represent their practical work.

In English we have completed our re-telling of the story 'Rosie's Walk' and we have remembered to start our sentences with a capital letter and end them with a full stop. We are continuing to work on remembering finger spaces between words but have made our own 'finger-space' template to help us with this! ??

As historians we have begun to think about how the homes that we live in have changed over time. We shared the story 'Peepo!' by Janet and Allan Ahlberg and sorted old and new household items.  And finally, in PSHE we have been thinking about what makes us unique, exploring our hobbies and our interests. We have thought about what we are good at and what hobbies/ activities we enjoy out of school.

Year 2

This week the children have continued skip counting in tens, and estimated their position on a number line using the knowledge that 50 is the mid-point between 0 and 100. They have also used practical equipment and number fact knowledge to add and subtract tens. In English lessons the children have been introduced to the story ‘Jack and the Baked Beanstalk’ a twist on a familiar traditional tale. They have been learning about co-ordinating conjunctions and have practised using them to create a good sentence of their own. As scientists, they have learnt about forces and practised using simple pushes and pulls using PE equipment. As historians, they have enjoyed continuing to learn about flight through the historical figures the Wright Brothers and Amilia Earhart.

Year 3

In English, the children have been exploring "The Iron Man" in depth, and learning how to use tools such as similes, prefixes and apostrophes in their writing. As mathematicians, they have been adding and subtracting using three-digit numbers. As historians, they learned about Iron Age Hill Forts, and how Iron Age tribes used them for defence and protection. And, as scientists, the children learned about the three different types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic.

Year 4

This week, in English, the children have analysed the language and structural features of information texts before planning their own informative pieces about waterfalls. As mathematicians, the children have developed their confidence when adding and subtracting multiples of 100, using their understanding of place value to solve a variety of problems. In science, they have investigated the different melting and boiling points of materials. In topic, the children explored Ordnance Survey maps, learning to recognise common OS map symbols and use six-figure grid references to locate places accurately. They then put these skills into practise while exploring our local area using maps and compasses.

Year 5

This week in Year 5, the children have continued to study 'Leon and the Place Between' by writing setting descriptions using effective verbs, vivid adjectives and speech to develop the character. They also planned their own portal narratives ready to write next week. As mathematicians, the children have added numbers to one million using number lines, rounding and column addition to convey their thinking. To support their topic learning, Year 5 enjoyed a trip to the Canal Basin to learn how the development of the canals helped industries to grow by making it easier to transport heavy good all around the country.

Year 6

Year 6 had an amazing time at Dol y Moch last week, they all developed their resilience, independence and collaborative skills!  The staff are all very proud of them!

This week as mathematicians, the children have been learning how a constant difference can make written calculations more efficient. They have also learnt how to redistribute values to make a calculation easier and more efficient.

As writers the children have been immersing themselves in a new text: Rose Blanche which is about a young German girl whose life is changed forever as a result of what she experiences during World War 2. The children have been making predictions, exploring characters and vocabulary and have written a contrast poem.

As historian's the children have understood the importance of politics in WW2.
