The children have taken part in lots of activities this week linked to refugees and asylum seekers; they learnt a lot from listening to the real-life story of a Syrian refugee. In Year 6, we looked at media headlines and how language can be used to influence how people think about refugees, we then compared myths with truths. Children also looked at poems written by refugees and discussed the impact of being labelled 'refugee'.
Some children in 6HA took part in ikebana workshop today with specialist artists from Japan. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging, blossoms, branches, leaves and stems to bring out the inner qualities of flowers and other live materials and express emotion.
A big thank you to Frances and Mandy who have donated lettuce, cauliflowers and cabbages to our Year 2 vegetable patch. We are always so thrilled with the kindness and support from our local community. Thank you!
On Tuesday 15th June, Year 6 enjoyed a live stream with Professor Brian Cox and his panel of experts, looking at climate change as part of The Great Science Share.
The children have enjoyed playing together in the beautiful sunshine this week, however we would like to remind parents to ensure that they come to school with a named sunhat. In addition we would like to request that sun cream is applied at home in the
morning before the start of the school day. Thank you
Next week is Refugee week, which is a UK-wide festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of
refugees and people seeking sanctuary. The theme this year is 'We Cannot Walk Alone' which reflects the message in Martin Luther King's famous historic speech. The children will be taking part in 'simple acts' which are everyday actions like singing a song, playing a game or reading a book that we can all do to stand with refugees and make new connections. We will also be taking part in a virtual chat session with a refugee speaker from Amnesty International- we hope that the small things we can do together can be the start of a bigger change
Our school is working with a team of researchers at the University of Oxford on a research project called MY-CATS. The MY-CATS team are testing out a new way of identifying and supporting young children who might benefit from help to build confidence and reduce the chance of problems with anxiety now and in the future. We are inviting all parents/carers of children
in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes to take part– as this project is to help reduce problems with fears and
worries now and in the future, your child does not need to be experiencing difficulties with anxiety to take part.
To find out more information about the project please watch this short video:

A separate letter has been sent home to parents so please follow the links in the letter to complete the consent form. Please complete the consent and screening questionnaires by 13th June 2021. We ask one parent/carer to complete the consent and questionnaires for a child. If you have more than one child across the participating classes, you can complete the consent and screening questionnaires for each child
Well done Year 6 for entering the gazebo competition and thank you to everyone who votes for us. We have managed to win an outdoor gazebo for our school! It will be ideal for providing shade and an area for first aid during our sports days and visits to the Memorial Park. A big thank you to every person who voted for us!
Well done Year 6!
You may have noticed some pots on the playground, they are labelled R - Year 6. As part of our Summer of Sunflowers project each year group has their own sunflower! We wonder which one will be the tallest. Good Luck!
