We are looking forward to welcoming the
Olympic torch to school next week as part of Coventry School’s ‘Flame of Friendship’. During the week the children in Y1-Y6

have their sports day later this term.
Over the last year the SENA group have created over 20 trails through the woods. They will be adding more during the summer months including some to celebrate special events including the Memorial Park centenary with a special “100” trail and a “Going for Gold “ trail at the start of next term. The SENA group would like our help!
They would like to display a trail made solely from contributions from the people who have visited the woods. They would like children who have visited to write poems or short extracts about what they did and make drawings inspired by their visits. Contributions from families would also be welcomed. They are very keen to include work from adults in any medium and from the very young.
All contributions should be no greater than an A4 size as they aim to laminate these prior to displaying them on |
We would like to support Free Radio by fundraising for the Cash for Kids charity. They have asked Coventry schools to engage with their “Wear Your Rainbow” by encouraging children
to choose a colour to wear on Friday 2nd July and come to school dressed in that colour - or even wear EVERY colour of the rainbow for the day! Cash for Kids would like to encourage
everyone who takes part to make a donation of £2. As the rainbow has been a symbol of hope during the pandemic, this charity feel that it is a great way to raise some money for local children whose lives continue to be affected. With our help Cash for Kids can improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in our communities who are affected by poverty, illness, neglect or have additional needs. Please put the date in your diary; more information is available on their website: freeradio.co.uk/cashforkids
Earlier this year, Year 6 children entered The Heart of England Rotary Clubs competition for schools to design a Peace Garden and win a Peace Pole.
Using the Peace Pole as a focal point , Rotary wanted children to design an outside area for the school that would serve as a place of Reflection and Tranquillity. An area to engage all the senses and provide an interactive, learning environment
We are delighted that Libby in 6HA won the competition, with her amazing design. The Peace Pole has been officially presented today by Margaret Morley from The Rotary Club and displays Libby's unique design in 8 different languages that represent our school. Well done Libby, the Peace Pole is a fantastic addition to our school garden and a recognised symbol of peace that will be enjoyed by many children.
This week, we have been extremely lucky to host some Japanese artists at our school. Small groups of Year 5 and
6 children participated in either a wood carving and printing session, or an ikebana session. The Japanese wood
block carving and printing was taught by professional artist Hiroko Imada. The children designed a wave, based
on Hokusai’s famous woodblock print of The Wave, which they then traced onto a woodblock, using carbon paper. Using special Japanese wood cutting tools, Hiroko showed them how to use the tools safely and they chipped away at the wood to reveal their design. The printing process was quite technical, but all the children rose to the challenge and we now have some special wave prints that they are very proud of! Over the next few
weeks, more groups of Year 5 and 6 will also print from the woodblocks and will turn hundreds of prints into abstract wave installations!
A group of children also practiced ikebana, which is the Japanese art of flower arranging; a tradition over a 1000
years old. Ikebana aims to bring out the inner qualities of flowers and other live materials, and express emotion.
If you would like to see any of the Japanese art the children have produced, it will be exhibited at Coventry Cathedral from Friday 2nd July 2021. A small group of Year 5 and 6 children will represent our school at the exhibition opening to talk to visitors about the art they have created.
We were thrilled that we could finally present a cheque for £177.00 to Earlsdon Library– this was the money raised during the book sale on World Book Day 2020. Earlsdon Library will be using this money to buy new children’s books.
